- SOY Benefits by Dru Heldman, Founder of Butterfly Blends Candles
"As a maker of both SOY Wax and Paraffin wax products. I feel that I am uniquely qualified to give your the truth about both types of materials used to make candles."
It is a nice argument that many candle makers are touting about SOY candles like, it last longer, it's non-toxic, 100% natural, Environmentally friendly, stronger fragrance and reduced smoking etc... The truth is that many of these statements are true but there is no need to exaggerate. I like both material types for their inherent benefits. I've provided below a table that list the real Features & Benefits for both products. You make up your own mind. The important thing about any candle is it's QUALITY. A Quality made candle will provide the following regardless of wax type:
- Reduced smoke
- Even burn
- Great scent throw hot or cold
- Extended burning times
When you receive your Pinwilz Butterfly Blend candle product, you will understand.

| SOY WAX |
Good for the Planet |
Made from a process of refining soybean oils into a solid form. Product is Biodegradable
|
| SOY WAX |
Non Toxic
|
Is not a fossil fuel, but a vegetable product. You're familiar with how bad a candle smells when you blow one out, Right! Well, when you blow out a SOY candle, it actually smells good, weird, but we like it... |
| SOY WAX |
Longer Burn Times |
Provides approximately 30 to 40% longer burn times with proper usage due to a slower consumption of the wax material. |
| SOY WAX |
Good for the American Farmer |
Supports American SOY Bean growers. Soy wax is only produced in the United States of America. So this is good for American economics, less travel miles to product and see this product so this is lowering the carbon foot print also. - Be Green! |
| SOY Wax |
Reduced Smoke |
This is false, Any candle that is smoking has the same problem, the wick is to long. Extinguish your candle and cut wick to 1/4 inch above wax then relight. SOY Candles have a larger wick and can produce more smoke when the wick is not trimmed properly. |
| SOY Wax |
Better Fragrance Throw |
This is all depending on how much is used in manufacturing. A SOY candle requires more Fragrance Oil than Paraffin to provide the same throw. Fragrances themselves have variations in strength, simply by what they are. Also, It is said that everyone smells the same thing differently. The way something smells is 100% opinion and personal preference. |
| Paraffin Wax |
Less Expensive |
If you're on a tight budget, a paraffin candle will cost you less money. This is due to supply and demand. Most candles made are made with paraffin wax. Paraffin candles also require smaller wicks and are not as sensitive to precise wick placement. Further reducing manufacturing costs and providing you with a more price friendly product. Paraffin candles are typically made using less fragrance oil than the Soy versions and since the fragrance is the most expensive ingredient, well, it will save on manufacturing costs. |
| Paraffin Wax |
Color Choices |
Paraffin waxes accept color and dyes better than SOY wax creating a vivid color pallet. Also, there are many techniques available that do not negatively impact performance that provide a wide range of visual effects. Cracked, feathered, textured, whipped, painted and so-on. Makes for a great home decor' prop. |
| How to Tell |
Testing Wax |
If you are unsure what type of wax you have. Here is a safe easy way to tell. Let your candle burn until you have a hot melted pool of wax. Take a pencil and dip your pencil into the melted wax, just for a second. Remove pencil and let cool for a moment. If the wax immediately forms a hard shell, it either is paraffin or has paraffin in the blend. If the pencil is now oily and the oil has soaked into the pencil, it is SOY. |
